Fellini wrote and directed a number of movies, including shorter segments in anthology films. Of special interest are his neorealist movies, the Oscar-winning La Strada and Nights of Cabiria; the transitional movie La Dolce Vita (which coined the term "paparazzi" and won an Oscar for its elaborate costumes); and his experimental/surrealist pictures 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, and Satyricon. A later movie of interest to Americans is his Casanova, starring Donald Sutherland in the title role. Unlike most treatments of Casanova -- in film, fiction, and biography -- Fellini held the character in contempt and sought to explore the void in his personality, rather than to lionize him or use him as an object of titillation.
