One of the first modern biologists, Charles Darwin and his work have been controversial since his own time -- something he shied away from. His work provided the basis for modern biological science, which before him existed only in the most primitive form. Through no intent of his own, and mostly because of the age he lived in, his work has also been key in the conflicts between faith and reason, religious traditionalism and modernism.
