One of the most important filmmakers of the silent era and the early twentieth century in general, Chaplin is best known for his Little Tramp character, who starred in dozens of shorts. The best, and best-known, Tramp films are The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), and 1931’s City Lights, Chaplin’s first sound feature, though it contained no dialogue. His attack on Nazism, The Great Dictator, was his first talkie -- and left the Little Tramp behind, as Chaplin felt he belonged solely to the silent era when film was a pantomime art.

The final movie he directed, A Countess from Hong Kong, was one of only two in which he didn’t star -- and his only color movie. The comedy starred Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren, and the theme music Chaplin wrote for it became one of the year’s biggest hits.
