Freud wrote for an educated audience, but the field of psychology was too new for him to write specifically for professionals. Books like The Interpretation of Dreams and Beyond the Pleasure Principle are widely accessible to a modern audience, which is already somewhat familiar with Freudian notions through cultural osmosis. His later books, Civilization and Its Discontents and Moses and Monotheism, expand many of his earlier ideas into a discussion not just of human nature but of the nature of human civilization.
