Reading “Jane Eyre”

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Recent research into the reading habits of men and women confirms what people in the book trade have long suspected — women are much more adventurous in their choice of fiction than the male of the species. The study, carried out by Lisa Jardine and Annie Watkins of Queen Mary College in London, concludes that "[m]en who read fiction tend to read fiction by men, while women read fiction by both women and men." The study also finds that, with the possible exception of Jane Austen, men believe that "great literature" is only written by men. Read more… <!–4ca6d8f929fc4619bf0df060b298c8a4–>

Fame, who’s going to live for ever?

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Who, alive today, will still be famous in 500 years? It’s the kind of question people might ask at dinner parties during a lull in conversation. But it’s one I’ve been pondering for the past couple of years, while writing a novel about three men who were together for a six-month period of bloody battles and lavish parties in central Italy. The story, set in 1502, is almost entirely a true one. The names of the men? Cesare Borgia, Niccolo Machiavelli and Leonardo da Vinci. Read more…

Simply Charly, A “Rich and Vibrant” Website Launches “Ask The Expert,” A Free Resource

Monday, August 16th, 2010

www.SimplyCharly.com, an educational suite of websites for students and teachers that brings to life, in a compelling and engaging manner, some of the most prominent historical figures, has launched its “Ask the Expert” platform, an online resource that will connect students and general knowledge seekers with scholars and experts from around the world.

These personalities, each a renowned expert in his or her field, can provide answers to questions relating to science, literature, philosophy, music, and other disciplines.

“This exciting new section of our website allows students to connect with leading scholars from around the globe by asking specific questions about history’s most notable movers and shakers, and receive accurate and timely responses ,” says Charles Carlini, founder of Simply Charly. “For example, if you’d like to know anything about Sigmund Freud, Tamas Pataki, Honorary Senior Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Melbourne, Australia, will provide an answer. Or if you are intrigued by Salvador Dalí, Joseph Nuzzolo, founder and president of the Salvador Dalí Society, will address your question.”

In all, 30 experts are currently on hand to answer questions and provide valuable information; new experts and questions are added to the section weekly.

First-time visitors to the site can simply register for a free account and visit the “Ask the Expert” section to submit their questions. Our experts will respond within 24-48 hours by posting answers on the “Ask the Expert” page of the Simply Charly website.

“We understand that searching the web may not always lead you to the answers you seek,”  Carlini says. “That’s why we created our ‘Ask The Expert’ platform to connect those seeking answers or guidance with experts who specialize in a particular field or historical person . We are pleased to have partnered with such an illustrious team of scholars and look forward to working together to provide a valuable resource for students and general knowledge seekers worldwide.”

Book Review | Stephen Hawking: A Biography by Kristine Larsen

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Kristine Larsen begins her biography of Stephen Hawking with a central question: how has a theoretical physicist known for “esoteric mathematics” and “the secret language of general relativity” become a cultural icon and the most recognizable scientist in the world? While the author still grapples with the same question by the end of this brief volume, Stephen Hawking: A Biography provides a capably concise view of the enigmatic genius, packing a remarkable amount of material into a few chapters. However, the book’s very brevity denies the reader a true appreciation for Hawking’s accomplishments, genius, and inner life. Hawking’s popular science book A Brief History of Time was criticized for its pedantry and impenetrability; quite the opposite charge could be leveled at Larsen’s biography of the man. This is light reading that doesn’t do quite enough justice to its heady subject. Read more…
